Public High School, Vernon, British Columbia, KanadaMax Wieth, 14, from Herborn, spent a high-school year in Vernon, in British Columbia in Canada. Max came home in July 2006.
"My organization " Do it! Sprachreisen " gave me information about a few different host families. We chose a host family that seemed similar to my family. I had been to Canada on a family holiday and liked it. Canadians are open and friendly and it was very easy to make friends with most kids.
I went to Clarence Fulton Secondary School. Most subjects were similar to here. But all eighth-graders had to do practical subjects like metalwork and woodwork. I liked that.
I'm younger than most exchange pupils and none of my friends has done this yet but I think I've matured. A high-school year is a good way to learn English and live in another culture. I would definitely say other kids should do this too."
Erfahrungsbericht Internatsbesuch in KanadaIn the summer, 17-year-old Tassilo Zahn, from Bad Kreuznach, came home after a year at a boarding school in Canada. Tassilo went to Ridley College, near Toronto, in the Canadian province of Ontario. He went to Canada with the organization Do it! Sprachreisen. Tassilo spoke to Spot on about his high-school year.
Why did you choose Canada for your high-school year? I had been Canada before ? on holiday with my family ? and I really liked it. And my older sister had had an unpleasant experience during her high-school year in the US.
What made you decide to go to a boarding school? The teachers often live at the school and can take a lot of time for you. So I think pupils at boarding schools get more support from their teachers, and my parents thought that would be a good idea. I didn?t really know what to expect, but I was curious.
What did you like most about your Canadian school? The school was very well equipped ? for example, the sports equipment there was excellent. I also liked the subjects at the school ? for example, computer science and other subjects that I couldn?t do at my German school.
What other things were different about school in Canada? The biggest difference was that we had to wear a uniform. Our uniform was quite traditional and included a blue jacket and tie! I had to learn how to tie a tie ? I had no idea about that!
What were your classmates like? All of them were nice people and it was easy to make friends. It was even possible to meet another pupil?s family and spend a weekend at home with them. We also had a few excursions ? to Boston and to New York. There were about 600 pupils in total. My roommate was Canadian, but about a third of the kids at the school were not from Canada ? so you often heard different languages around the school. The lessons were always in English of course.
Why is a high-school year a good idea? It?s an experience you?ll never forget. It makes you think and gives you new ideas. If you?re open-minded and talk to people, the friendships you make last longer than just that one year. You have the chance to make friends in different countries, and that?s great.
